VISE VISUAL STORYTELLING IN EDUCATION
Today, our research focuses on learning based on Geovisual Analytics Statistics applied in education. The VISE (Visual Storytelling in Education) project supports the use of learning for these focus areas:
The storytelling process available in “Statistics eXplorer” will be applied to improve the students knowledge and understanding of sophisticated statistical relations. Teachers will be able to, individually and together, develop a dynamic teaching material through storytelling, through the web. Students will be able to, with help of powerful geographical statistics, explore statistical relations on their own. A better understanding of how educators and their students can elicit deeper user understanding and participation by exploiting dynamic web-enabled statistics visualization is of importance. Together with the associated science of perception in learning in relation to the use of multidimensional spatio-temporal statistical data this will contribute to the research fields of Geovisual Analytics as well as educational science.
VISE has received financial support for 2015-2017 from VINNOVA (Swedish government agency) 1 milj Skr, Vetenskapsrådet (Swedish Research Council) 4,5 milj Skr, and Norrköping Kommun 1,6 milj Skr.
NCVA in collaboration with ISV and Norrköping Kommun awarded one million kronor
ISV (Institutionen för samhälls och välfärdsstudier), NCVA and Norrköping Kommun are awarded 1 million kronor by VINNOVA's research call about "tomorrow's school within the digital community". More than 120 applications competed for 12 million kronor. Our project was awarded the full request 1 million kronor in this tough competition.

Storytelling, in our context,
is about telling a story on the subject of statistics data and related analytics reasoning about how gained knowledge was achieved. Storytelling within this participative web context, could more engagingly draw the user into exciting reflections and sometimes change a perspective altogether. The story is placed in the hands of those who need it, e.g. policy and decision makers, teachers but also the informed citizens. This dynamic visual storytelling is a way of telling stories through interactive web-enabled visualization with integrated snapshots highlighting important discoveries. Stories enable a leap in understanding by the audience so as to grasp how statistical indicators may influence our society. Discoveries that more engagingly draw us into reflections about the gained knowledge on how life is lived - and can be improved - from region to region and in addition let the reader dynamically participate in this web enabled process

2009: NCVA and OECD announce a novel storytelling technique
Sound information at sub-national level and benchmarking of regions across national borders has increased in importance in the policy agenda of many countries due to higher integration driven by institutional processes and economic globalisation. Geovisual analytics techniques help illustrating complex data such as regional, spatiotemporal and multidimensional statistics. Interactive time-linked visual representations enable the users to simultaneously analyse relations among different variables. “OECD Regional eXplorer”, developed by NCVA in collaboration with OECD, is today a worldwide recognized web-enabled tool for visualizing and better understanding the socio-economic structure of OECD regions and their performance over time. Geovisual Analytics in the OECD Regional explorer has so far focused more on tools to analyse regional economic performance than on methods that efficiently publish gained knowledge. Storytelling is indeed part of the analytical process and represents a catalyst for discussion generating new value in a social setting. In this context, we introduce a novel storytelling that supports the editorial authoring process with the goal to advance technology critical to the sharing of information and publishing. With the introduction of this new technique, we are moving away from a clear distinction between authors and readers: The analyst can discuss with interested readers the visual discoveries which have been captured into snapshots together with descriptive text and hyperlinks. The author gets feedback from colleagues, adapts the story and publishes it using "Story". This advanced storytelling technology applied to OECD Regional eXplorer has become a complete on-line publication to highlight recent trends and relevant disparities among OECD regions. 2010: SMHI and Swedish Road Administration adopt GeoAnalytics tools from NCVA
During the winter months, the Swedish roads are dangerous for driving. Ice, rain and snow make the roads slippery and hundreds of people are killed or injured. The Swedish road administration based on measurements from 700 road stations prevents accidents by preparing the roads based on real-time weather forecasting. Today, this is done by accessing static pictures over Internet and direct contacts with meteorologists. The Road Warning Prediction application RoadVis was developed in collaboration with the SMHI and assembled from GAV Flash components (map with layer support, glyph layer, parallel coordinates, line diagram) demonstrates that advanced geovisual analytics tools are suitable for developing highly interactive and tailor-made applications applied to early warning management. The map shows stations coloured according to temperature or ice slipperiness. This application is published on the Web by the Swedish Road Administrator.

2009: NCVA is awarded 1,5 Mkr from VINNOVA for collaboration with Ericsson Research
NCVA develops advanced Visual Analytics technology in close collaboration with partner Ericsson Research in Linkoping. This research was the foundation for a proposal to VINNOVA’s program: Smarter, faster, converging solutions within IT and data/tele communication as part of "Tomorrow's Communication". NCVA targets Visual Analytics, where novel techniques is being developed and applied to smart network management prototypes for mobile communication networks (MCN). The application area is network management of MCN in 3GPP defined systems, e.g. LTE. Additionally, we target solutions for Self Organizing Networks means, managing the complexity in large networks promoted by operators. The figure below shows a snapshot where large temporal and multivariate network data is analysed by operators.
A scientific research paper was recently presented at the VAST09 IEEE conference in Atlantic City USA. "Geovisual Analytics for Self-Organizing Network Data" by Ho Van Quan, Tobias Åström and Mikael Jern

October 2008, OECD launches OECD eXplorer
OECD has launched a powerful, interactive tool for visualising and analyzing regional statistics. OECD eXplorer combines maps and other graphics via the Internet, to increase the user's understanding of regional differences and structures across and within OECD countries. To try out the regional maps and statistics using OECD eXplorer, go to:
http://www.oecd.org/gov/regional-policy/regionalstatisticsandindicators.htm
The development of OECD eXplorer is the result of a fruitful cooperation between OECD and NCVA,at Linköping University, Sweden. In the seminar on generating knowledge from statistics, organised by Statistics Sweden and OECD in Stockholm in May, Professor Mikael Jern from NCVA presented a first version with some OECD statistics. Since then, the development team at NCVA has worked intensively on improving the tool and adapting it to all the needs expressed by OECD.
